    Description

"The potatoes in the ghetto were always rotten, frozen - garbage. But perhaps it was still possible to find something edible in the trash? Hundreds, especially children, would come to burrow in the buried pile in the ground in the hours when the watch was not strict." (Source: Photo-caption from "Diary of a Youth in the Ghetto, Lodz 1942," a photo-essay featuring excerpts from the diary of a young person imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto alongside photos taken by Henryk Ross in the ghetto between 1940 and 1944. The photo-essay was published in Israel after 1958.)
